Rapid Review.. Chvrches - Recover EP

Glaswegian band, CHVRCHES (that's a more Google friendly "Churches" for the uninitiated) are gearing up to release their debut EP, Recover on 25th March (UK) and have let the lovely folk over at Pitchfork stream it for free - there's no harm in trying before you buy after all, check it out here!

The formerly mysterious trio, who emerged out of the blue in May of last year with the moody electro single that was 'Lies' - read and listen here - were made a part of the BBC's Sound of 2013 Poll at the end of last year, and have since released second single, 'The Mother We Share' and now, the Recover EP. The title track, 'Recover' is a much lighter affair than the aforementioned 'Lies', in fact, it positively sparkles, and I can only describe it as warm electro akin to that of Swedish duo The Knife. The voice of singer Lauren Mayberry is rather inviting, resonating in a childishly innocent manner through the 3 tracks (the additional remix is a treat too), and juxtaposing nicely with messrs Iain Cook and Martin Doherty on the darkly throbbing 'ZVVL', before coming back to the forefront of the poppier 'Now Is The Time'.

Though short, Recover really is a treat of an EP, the high quality electro smothering your brain in a manner akin to dripping treacle, and whetting your appetite for an album release (hopefully) later in the year. If not, more EP's will surely have to tide us over. Get on it now; it's worth all of your attention!

Recover EP is available via iTunes.

The band are touring the US in May/June before hitting the festival circuit later in the summer.

New Waves.. Churches - 'Lies'

Only just ran across this band whilst looking for some new music to listen to (if you have any suggestions -comment below!).

Glaswegian band, Churches, only have two songs to their name - that I can find anyway - but the whole affair is a moody electro powerhouse reminiscent of The Knife. The song in question, 'Lies', so far appears to have garnered them more than 100,000 hits on their YouTube channel since May, and it deserves it, the song is edgy and doesn't just wash over in a non-descript or sterile manner that a lot of electronic music can do. 'Lies' definitely shocks you out of your reverie!

Wonder Woman of the Week.. Robyn

A day late this week, apologies!

I've been listening to a lot of Robyn lately. Her music is so catchy and fun to listen to!

From 1997 until 2005, she was a well known Swedish pop star in her native country, with moderate successes in the US and UK with English song 'Show Me Love' charting well in in both countries.

Upon receiving a negative reaction from her label in Sweden upon showing them her song 'Who's That Girl?', Robyn decided to start her own record label, Konichiwa Records, allowing her to have full creative control of her music, which deviated to a more electro-pop sound. Her self-titled album was a success both in Sweden and in the US and UK, churning out hit songs such as 'With Every Heartbeat', and allowing her to support Madonna on tour in 2008.

In 2010, Robyn released the Body Talk series, releasing first Body Talk Pt. 1 in June, then Body Talk Pt. 2 in September, followed by Body Talk, acting as a compilation album of the previous two, as well as having five new songs.

The success of Body Talk led to opportunities supporting Katy Perry in 2011 and Coldplay in 2012, allowing her music to reach wider audiences.

To me, Robyn is the best of both mainstream and indie sentiments. Most people probably know a Robyn song or two, without actually knowing that it's Robyn. She maintains her own credibility as an artist, writing her own material and even performing without backing dancers whilst also being successful commercially worldwide. By starting Konichiwa Records, she regained control of her own career, and has also collaborated with renowned artists, singers and rappers such as Swedish electro duo, The Knife, Bassment Jaxx, Britney Spears and Snoop Dogg.

Here's a selection of songs!
