New Waves.. Feathers - 'Land Of The Innocent'

You should all know by now that -whilst I love a bit of raucous or textured indie/rock music - I am also very electronically inclined. In fact I'd go to say that I ♥ electro, especially of the layered kind; sometimes minimal electronics just sound... sterile, don't you think?

However, here is a band that is most definitely not sterile. Welcome Feathers, a New York based four-piece that specialise in synth pop. Their song-  'Land Of The Innocent' - brings to mind a warmer, more welcoming Ladytron, with singer Anastasia Dimou hearkening to a lost innocence before a pretty dystopian and barren sci-landscape. And that's before the pounding drums kick in.

Their debut album, If All Now Here, and various merch is available to buy from their Bandcamp.

New Waves.. Delphic - 'Baiya'

Edit: Snazzy new video has been debuted - woop!

Manchester band, Delphic, return with 'Baiya', the first song to début  from their second album, Collections.

'Baiya' is reminiscent of the electro-pop vein of the singles taken from their previous 2009 album, Acolyte, albeit perhaps more chart friendly, with synths flowing as opposed to being used for choppy rhythms a la 'Doubt' and 'Halcyon', incorporating oriental strings around the refrain 'All hell is breaking loose' and walking the fine line between modern and comfortably retro. It is also not the euphorically hectic maelstrom of noise that was previously released song, 'Good Life' (I had no idea that this song existed until today!)

That said, I'm so glad to see/hear of Delphic again! I loved Acolyte and will most likely love Collections when it's released.

Collections is released on 28th Jan 2013.

New Waves.. Churches - 'Lies'

Only just ran across this band whilst looking for some new music to listen to (if you have any suggestions -comment below!).

Glaswegian band, Churches, only have two songs to their name - that I can find anyway - but the whole affair is a moody electro powerhouse reminiscent of The Knife. The song in question, 'Lies', so far appears to have garnered them more than 100,000 hits on their YouTube channel since May, and it deserves it, the song is edgy and doesn't just wash over in a non-descript or sterile manner that a lot of electronic music can do. 'Lies' definitely shocks you out of your reverie!

New Waves.. The Ramona Flowers - 'Dismantle and Rebuild'

Presumably named after comic book character, Scott Pilgrim's spunky love interest, the debut song from indie electro outfit, The Ramona Flowers is a classy affair. Infused with subtle dubstep elements, 'Dismantle and Rebuild' flows passionately - and the video is apt, as the sounds bring to mind cityscapes and speeding traffic, and where a lot of electronic music can sound stark, this song is rather comforting to the ear.

Apart from that, The Ramona Flowers' debut EP, Dismantle is OUT NOW and is currently floating around the cyberspace of the iTunes charts.

Rapid Review.. Purity Ring - 'Shrines'

I mentioned that Purity Ring's debut album, Shrines, was released a few weeks ago, and after eagerly waiting for it to come out for what felt like ages, I finally purchased it!

Was it every bit as amazing as the singles that preceded it? I'm glad to say that, yes, it really was! But it was in a different way than I expected. It was more subtle than I anticipated, being delicate and dreamlike, but also confident and dark, like the musical fluctuation of dreams and nightmares intertwined. The childlike vocal of Megan James only adds to this effect, spouting somewhat grotesque lyrics pertaining to the fantastical and longings of love.

Purity Ring's penchant for merging and creating new words (or 'neologisms!' - hooray for the English student in me!) continues here, for example, 'Crawlersout', the opening track for the album, striking the perfect balance between moody and epiphanous, although, after looking up the lyrics (here, bottom of the page) I can confirm that even my metaphorical and poetic mind struggles to decipher any deeper meaning from this! All of the previous singles, 'Ungirthed', 'Berlispeak' and the viral hit 'Lofticries', are present on the album, and rightly so. The first and second singles from the album, 'Obedear' and 'Fineshrine', both polarise Purity Ring's musical spectrum, the first being more subtle, the second practically the most upbeat track on the album, and both equally as fascinating. And that's a word best used to describe Purity Ring, as the sound they create and the lyrics they write are nothing if not unique and usual.

I'd definitely say that Shrines is one of the most hyped and anticipated albums of the year, and rightly so! It's definitely worth a listen, and even if (somehow!) this is your first time hearing of Purity Ring, I  would definitely recommend you give it a try! As for touring, the band are currently on a tour of the States, Canada, UK and Europe, hitting the UK for London, Brighton, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Glasgow dates in late November!
